Jeff Herbers Claims First Ever Feature Win In Modified

by Larry Lowrey

For the second time in as many weeks, the O’Reilly Auto Parts Motor Speedway played host to a first time feature winner in the Modified division. Jeff Herbers (Holton) went out front and stayed out front on his way to career modified feature win number 1!

Herbers started off the night with a heat race win. Something he has done in the past in his racing career. Tonight the only difference is that Herbers got to the front and never gave up the lead from the start.

"It felt good. The car was smooth and the crew did a good job working on it all week!," said Herbers.

Last week’s feature winner, Allen Henery (Emporia), darted out on the start behind Herbers. A strong four-car battled was waged from 2nd through 5th spot. Henery, Greg Hanna (Auburn), Leon Bidinger (Perry) and Rodger Peck (Ogden) all took turns at each other trying to get to the front. Peck would spin out on lap 13 and caution was displayed on the speedway.

On the restart Herbers again moved out front followed by Henery. Hanna and Bidinger were still there with Henery trying to make their bid. Ryan Phillips (Emporia), second year modified driver, now had made his way into the top 5 and wanted a piece of the action. Herbers wondered if anyone was ever going to come up and make a run and started to think about winning when he saw the white flag.

"Make it through 3 and 4 one more time," said Herbers about seeing the white flag.

Finishing in the top 5 behind Herbers were Henery, Hanna, Bidinger and Ryan Phillips. Steve Coffman (Emporia), Herbers, Henery and Hanna were heat race winners on the night.

In the Superstock division Joey Selbach (Silver Lake) powered his "Fast Orange" machine to the feature win over "Mr. Consistent" Jerry Covert (Topeka).

Selbach, an earlier heat race winner, took the lead from the start and held his line never missing a beat on the way to the victory. Covert, the points leader heading into tonight, showed why he was just that. Winning his race and then by placing 2nd in the A Main.

Rounding out the top 5 were Tracy Schaefer (Topeka), Shane Wettengel (Topeka) and Danny Holt (Topeka.) Heat Race winners Sebach and Covert.

Pals Josh Everhart (Osage City) and Cherokee Boyd (Osage City) slugged it out in the Factory Stock Feature. Everhart got by Boyd early in the feature. Not to show any signs of letting up Boyd raced up on Everhart but did not have enough to get the job done on the night. Tyson Young (Council Grove) made a nice run through the pack of competitors to finish a close third.

Mike Ross (Americus) and current point leader, Shannon Lux (Hoyt), finished 4th and 5th respectfully.

In the Cruiser class Rodney Cleaver (Topeka) picked up the win. After some tough luck in the last couple of cruiser features, Cleaver was able to put a winning run together on the 3/8 mile track.

Devin Stock (Topeka) took home the honors in the Pony Stock division.

"We've been working on it," Herbers said in the winner's circle. "We've been changing everything every week and maybe we found something this week."
